What is an ELO in BCSD?

Extended Learning Opportunities (ELO) is Back! BCSD is pleased to announce that it is working to again provide students additional resources and opportunities beyond the regular school day. ELOs will mostly occur after school, but can also occur before school and during the weekends. What is the focus of ELO? High interest reading, mental health supports, college and career exploration, science, technology, engineering, arts, sports and critical thinking. How do students join an ELO? Each month building principals will share the upcoming offerings along with the Google Form for students to enroll. These will be shared around the 8th of every month. Each ELO will typically last for 1 month and ELOs that repeat will still have a new monthly enrollment period. The Corner Stone Bookshop: Although our ELOs will begin in earnest in December, Beekmantown has partnered with the Corner Stone Bookshop (located at 110 Margaret St.) as part of our overall ELO program. We are excited to offer students a chance to obtain high interest books while also supporting a local small business. Students in grades 3-12 will be bussed during the school day to the Corner Stone Bookshop. Each student will be able to choose 3 books of their choice at no charge to them. BCSD is using funding from the NYS grant it obtained to facilitate this opportunity, as well as all ELOs. Middle school students were the first group of BCSD students to explore the store. Did you know that the Cornerstone Bookshop has 4 levels and over 70,000 books? From Harry Potter to Ulysses, and Beetle Bailey to Percy Jackson, if you have a topic of interest, chances are the Corner Stone Bookshop has a book for you. The book store is typically closed on Mondays but has partnered with Beekmantown to be open on Mondays solely for Beekmantown students to allow this ELO to occur. The majority of our students had not visited the bookstore prior to this past Monday. However, all students expressed that they were excited, were easily able to find high interest books, and would definitely be going back. Stay tuned to ParentSquare for more ELO highlights!

Does Beekmantown CSD pay for AP classes?

Effective for the 2021-2022 school year, and pending final grant approval, Beekmantown CSD will pay for all AP or CAP courses! This outstanding and unprecedented opportunity will allow our students to receive college credit coursework free of charge! These programs, CAP/AP, at Beekmantown High School already supply outstanding students with a reduced per credit cost for 20 college credit courses, but this newly announced initiative will allow all students access to FREE college credits, right here at BCSD! This is just another example of how the district provides world class learning opportunities to our students.
